Medical Sonography Schools

If you want to work as a medical diagnostic sonographer or as an ultrasound technician, you will need to attend one of the country’s medical sonography schools. Before enrolling in a program, you should ensure that it is accredited. The accrediting body for this type of degree is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the CAAHEP. When you visit their website, you can search their online database of schools to find the program that is right for you.

There are approximately 191 programs in the country. However, there are constantly new programs being accredited so if you do not see a program that interests you, you should check the site again in a few months. Medical sonography schools break their programs into three main categories: general, vascular, and cardiac. A degree in any of these programs will help you to get you a job in the industry.

Currently, there are technological advances being made to sonography equipment almost every day. On one hand, these advances will change what you learn in your courses that are devoted to training you how to use the sonography equipment. On the other hand, these technological advances will eventually mean that sonography equipment can be used to look at body parts that the present day equipment cannot view. These changes may open up further specialties in the field. To ensure that people who are already working in the field stay notified of changes to the equipment, these professionals are often required to undergo additional training during their career. In addition, many certifying bodies require diagnostic sonographers to become recertified every few years. This process may require an exam.

Certification, however, is not mandated by state laws. Most sonographers opt to become certified because it helps them professionally. The certification process happens after you have graduated from one of the medical sonography schools. Three different national agencies will certify ultrasound technicians, and most of them require you to complete an exam. However, there is no reason to worry about the certification exam. It will cover topics that are very similar to the ones that your degree program covered.

There are actually a few different types of degree programs, and when you search the CAAHEP website, you will be able to narrow your search according to which type of program you desire. Medical sonography schools offer one-year certificates, two-year associates degrees, and four-year bachelor’s degrees. Most of these are also available to pursue as online courses. Some people opt to join the Armed Forces and obtain their training there. It does not really matter which course of action you pursue as they all lead to the same career.
